In the 1930s, inspired by the machines developed in the last century for the Orthodox method, Sir William McKercher pushed industrialization of tea processing further by developing the CTC method, English crushing, tearing and curling (grinding, shredding and rolling). This involves combining several processes in 3 easy steps during which tea leaves are dried, shredded, rolled and oxidized. This technique can significantly increase the production efficiency, speeding up the process of oxidation, simplifying the procedure, and standardizing quality. CTC is widely used in most producing areas, but it inevitably produces a more industrial quality of tea.
