Black Tea

Black teas undergo a complete oxidation. The leaves, subjected to controlled heat and humidity, undergo enzymatic oxidation which darken them and which transforms their aromas and flavours.

This Japanese black tea took five years of research (and tastings) to find. It is the first representative of this unusual tea style that we found had a true sense of identity. Darjeeling 2nd Flush Jungpana WM organic

Here is a golden opportunity to refine your tasting palate with two teas produced one after another this summer at Jungpana! A daunting challenge considering their close proximity in taste. This one offers a full and rich liquor, displaying abundant floral scents (wild rose), zests and wood (resin). The attack is lively and powerful, completed with a profound finish revealing fine spicy accents typical of the garden. A substantial and complex tea, an example of an exceptional classic lot.

Darjeeling 2nd flush Singbulli Organic

This magnificent Darjeeling 2nd Flush style black tea comes from the Singbulli Tea Estate, a quiet little garden on the road into Darjeeling’s Mirik Valley. This garden has made a little reputation for itself with its exceptional large leaf clonal teas. The EX-17 organic lot we are presenting here brilliantly showcases why.

Sun Moon Lake T-18

Here is a rare black tea from Taiwan, made using the well known T-18 cultivar which is derived from a cross between a large leafed tea from Burma (Ashamu) and a wild tea tree from southern Taiwan. Infused, its graceful leaves emanate smooth aromas of wintergreen, malt and tobacco. Lightly mentholated and generously fruity with notes of prune and raisin, its liquor is round, full and silky. A perfect tea for those special mornings.

Darjeeling 1st Flush Jungpana organic

This biological lot, produced from older tea plants, originates from one of the most famous gardens in Darjeeling. With a full and tasty liquor, the delivery on the palate is lively and aromatic, with full of notes of dry wood, fatty nuts and ripe fruit. Its character, full-bodied and malty, makes this tea a worthy morning companion by its simplicity.

Darjeeling 1st flush Puttabong Organic

A rich and flavorful mid-flush organic delight that crops up every year in Puttabong Tea Estate (known affectionately as the “Clonal Queen”) just north of Darjeeling town. This blend of cultivars (including the popular AV2 and the elusive T78) presents a well-defined taste profile, easy to follow as it develops in the mouth. Light herbal and flowery head notes moving into darker nuances (incense and muscat) before trailing off with fruity hints at the end (peaches). This year’s thirst quenching Darjeeling by excellence.

Huiming Hong Cha

This black tea, a recent innovation of Mr He, is composed of long curly leaves decorated with golden buds. In infusion, rich chocolate and gourmet notes (peanut oil) stimulate our senses. Its coppery and smooth liquor unfolds on the palate with an amazing complexity, combining tart, sweet and even umami (oyster) with its nuances of root vegetables (parsnips) and spices. La Cumbre Bitaco org.

High above the Western flanks of the Andes, in La Cumbre region, at over 1800m of altitude we find the luxurious garden origin of this organic black tea. A unique tea with the barley and woody taste, often found in stronger black teas. The choice of cultivars adds a sweeter edge of sugar cane, cocoa and honey. A great addition and a perfect morning tea!

Du Yun Hong Cha

Thanks to our passionate Guizhou producers, we have a new Chinese black tea on the menu. Using a white tea cultivar (Fuding Da Bai), the liquor is textured, sweet with a slightly acid character. The woody and malty notes resulting from the oxidation are enhanced with aerial, floral and spicy dimensions. A rich and sweet tea worthy of some beautiful pairings ... did somebody say Speyside Scotch?

Darjeeling 1st Flush Singell Organic & Fairtrade

This superb lot is from the "Heritage" section of this classic garden, planted with 150 year old tea bushes. The infusion of its beautiful whole leaves reveals a clear liquor, lively and balanced, with a rich aroma making it one of the best Darjeelings this year. Its herbaceous and floral notes contribute a surprising lightness to this fine and refreshing tea!

Darjeeling 1st Flush Sungma organic

Located near the Nepalese border, this garden offers a certified organic tea, produced with a sense of tradition. Its liquor, fresh and invigorating, is a pleasant balance between its woody (bark), mineral, cereal and fruity notes. Its finish is highlighted by a subtle hint of muscat aromas. A complete and satisfying tea that will keep delivering on its promise of quality throughout the year!

Tea Studio - Nilgiri Coonoor 03

These large, dark, metallic leaves come from the blue mountains of the Nilgiris, in Southern India. It is a stunning example of a tea from this category and is sure to please fans of light and aromatic black teas. Fruity (candied papaya, peach) and lightly floral (osmanthus) bouquet. On the palate, the bright liquor shows well-structured tannins and possesses spicy (pepper, coriander seed), fruity (orange zest, preserved fruit) and slightly malty aromas. The soft finish is long with nicely balanced fruity tannins.

Darjeeling 1st flush Giddapahar

Light, bright classic First Flush from a small family run garden with a big heart in the South of Darjeeling. This lot, produced from original old tea bushes (1890s) consists of large finely rolled leaves. Crisp, clear and refreshing, this tea shows great herbaceous character, nuanced by fruity (tomato) and woody (bark, nuts) aromas. An unpretentious tea enhanced by a charming aromatic bouquet!

Darjeeling 1st Flush Thurbo

This world class tea garden bestows upon us this heavenly clonal First Flush delight. This lot, composed of large leaves and curled buds, is typical of modern aesthetics. It’s light and spacious liquor ranges from scents of herbs and flowers (wild spring flowers) to supple notes of peach and muscatel. A perfect example of pure AV2 cultivar and the glory of young tea plants in the Himalayan soil.

Darjeeling 1st Flush Tukdah organic

Rich, sophisticated classic First Flush from the North of Darjeeling. Tukdah is a garden of great reputation that has been very quiet for 10 years and suddenly come back on the scene. This organic lot boasts the traditional compact flavour of established seed-grown plants from the 1890’s and promises to mellow beautifully with age. Lively aromas of herbs, wood and spices, altogether rounded by a subtle zesty finish. Well balanced, great mouth feel: the true spirit of old plant Darjeeling.
