On the Island of Misihima, off the coast of Hagi, Mr. Nakahara sources and digs the specific red clay, essential to his work.
The City of Hagi is famous for its ceramic teaware, a speciality that emerged there in the seventeenth century with the arrival of potters from Korea.
Our pieces come directly from Mr. Nakahara's workshop, a potter for over thirty years. The artist masters various styles typical to the region, including that of the famous ‘withdrawn' glaze. This sought after finish is the result of an outstanding understanding of the synergy between the clays, glazes and the intricacies of firing.
Hagi style ceramics are porous and, delightfully evolving day by day with use. Grooves in the coarse clay will be slightly highlighted and fine cracks will evolve as they absorb tannins. Consider these unique ceramics as living objects!

Never use with strong tasting foods or liquids.
Being porous, the bowl will change and develop natural cracks over time. If it becomes problematic simply make a traditional paste of cornstarch (1/3 starch and 2/3 water) and coat the entire piece.
